How to Store Vegetables?

After purchasing vegetables from the market, the next important question is How to Store Vegetables?

Storing vegetables is a kind of important activity which needs to be done necessarily. And if we fail in storing vegetables properly then it results in spoiling them. In this busy time, it is really hard to maintain things in the kitchen as well as in the refrigerator also. So, this blog really helps you in sorting out the problem of storing vegetables in the refrigerator properly.

After bringing from the market and before storing them in the fridge few steps needs to be followed properly. These steps will definitely help in removing any kind of bacterial, viral, and fungal infection. Also, it helps vegetables to stay fresh for a longer time.

Today I have vegetables: Capsicum, French Beans, Lemon, Ginger, Carrot, Green Chilies, Coriander leaves, and Tomatoes.

Step 1: Sorting out

Sort out the vegetables and keep them in different baskets/ utensils. Also, remove them from the plastic cover.

Step 2: Remove Wastage

  • Green Chilies– Discard the stem.
  • Coriander leaves– Discard the roots and check roughly for spoiled leaves and any other unused thing.
  • Tomatoes– Discard the stem.
  • Carrot– Discard the root and bottom part. Peel it.

Step 3: Washing

  •  Vegetables can be wash under running water. Vegetables like tomatoes, chilies, beans, etc need to be washed by rubbing them properly.
  • You can have water in a deep bowl and wash vegetables by dipping into it. Vegetables like coriander leaves and other leafy vegetables need to be washed like this until the dust removes.

Step 4: Drying

Place all the vegetables on a towel for drying for about 15- 20 minutes. Storing moist vegetables also leads to spoiling them.

Step 5: Storing Vegetables

Once all the vegetables dried up. Now the time to store. So, here comes the answer to the main question How To store Vegetables?

We are having methods to store each vegetable:

  • Green Chilies: Take an airtight container. Place a tissue paper on it. Place all the green chilies over it. Cover the green chilies with another tissue paper and close the lid. This way green chilies will stay fresh for 10-15 days.
  • Lemon: There are 2 ways to store lemon- 1. Put all the lemon in a cloth bag and put it in the refrigerator. 2- Wrap individual lemon in tissue paper and place it individually like this in the refrigerator.
  • Ginger- Before storing ginger, check if there is any black eye. If yes, discard it with a knife first. Then put in a zip lock bag and store it like this. If no, simply put in a zip lock bag and store it in the refrigerator.
  • Coriander leaves- Take an airtight container. Place a tissue paper on it. Place all the coriander leaves over it. Cover the green chilies with another tissue paper and close the lid. It helps coriander leaves to stay fresh for about 8- 10 days, especially in the summer season.
  • Capsicum- After drying, simply put capsicums in the vegetable basket. They will stay fresh for a minimum of 8 -10 days.
  • French Beans- Take a cloth bag and store all the french beans in it. French Beans absorb fungus in just a single day during summer because of its moisture. The cloth bag absorbs all the moisture and beans will be safe for 5- 6 days.
  • Tomatoes- Place all the tomatoes in a basket and keep in the refrigerator. Tomatoes will be fresh for the next 7-8 days.
  • Carrot- Take a container. Place a tissue paper on it. Cut the carrots into 3-4 pieces. Put all the carrots likewise and close the lid. This way carrots will stay fresh for 5-6 days. The container should not be airtight as the carrot breathes and releases moisture which gets absorbed by the tissue paper. If we choose an airtight container then the carrot will not breathe and got rotten.

Important Points:

  1. Do not buy vegetables in large quantities as they start losing their nutritional value. Buy for a maximum of 7 days so that every week you can have fresh vegetables.
  2. Though these steps seem lengthy yet it saves a lot of time from our daily routine, especially for working women.
  3. Place tissue paper on the base of the vegetable basket so that it also absorbs moisture and also protects the basket to get dirty. Change this tissue paper after every 8-9 days or whenever you find it dirty.
