Tomato Chutney- South Indian Style

best side dish for anykind of south Indian dish like dosa, idli, uttapam, etc.

Ingredients
  

  • medium-sized onion (sliced)
  • 5-6 no garlic cloves
  • 2-3 no green chilies
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes(roughly chopped)
  • 2-3 no whole red chili
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil for tempering
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 8-10 no fresh curry leaves

Instructions
 

Preparing Chutney

  • Heat a pan, add 2 tbsp of oil in it. Do notoverheat the oil.
  • Add 2-3 whole red chiliesin it.
  • Add garlic cloves andgreen chilies to it. Saute on a medium flame for 1 minute. Do not overcook thegarlic cloves.
  • Add sliced onion to it.Cook for 2-3 minutes on medium flame or till the onion becomes translucent.
  • As the onion changescolor, add roughly chopped tomatoes followed by salt as per your taste.
  • Mix well and cook thismixture for 10 minutes on low flame or till the tomatoes cooked well.
  • The mixture is ready.Turn off the flame and allow it to cool down.
  • Transfer the mixture inthe mixing jar and without adding water blend it to make smooth chutney.
  • Transfer the chutney in a bowl.

Preparing Tempering

  • Heat a tempering pan. Add 1 tbsp of oil in it.
  • As the oil heats well,add 1 tsp of mustard seeds.
  • Followed by 8-10 curryleaves. At this stage turn off the flame and allow the curry leaves to cook alittle.
  • Pour the mixture on thechutney.
  • Tomato Chutney is readyto serve.

Notes

  • Adjust the consistency as per  your choice.
  • You can add/ eliminate green chilies according to your taste.
  • Do not overcook any ingredient.
  • You can double/ triple the number of ingredients as per the number of people.
  • Serve it with dosa, idli, uttapam or any south Indian dish of your choice.
